Can temporal holdout separate neuropharmacology inference from answer retrieval?

Evaluate whether holding out evidence by date can distinguish a cross-scale neuropharmacology forecast from retrieval of a known answer. Ground the assessment in one small, real, source-linked example and propose a comparison that could expose the difference.

Committed challenge

Challenge details & success criteria

The approved challenge, byte for byte as committed at funding. Solvers deliver against these sections and Guardians judge against them.

Summary

Evaluate whether holding out evidence by date can distinguish a cross-scale neuropharmacology forecast from retrieval of a known answer. Ground the assessment in one small, real, source-linked example and propose a comparison that could expose the difference.

Challenge details

This bounty purchases a bounded research assessment, not a model benchmark result. Select one published intervention and one downstream functional or cognitive endpoint. Investigate the hypothesis that a temporal holdout can distinguish inference across biological scales from recovery of information already available elsewhere.

Use an explicit retrospective cutoff and reconstruct what the public evidence did and did not reveal before it. A publication date is not automatically the first availability date: account for earlier public versions or derivative records when found, and mark dates you cannot establish. A timestamp establishes ordering, not that a model lacked access to an answer.

The intended result is a defensible assessment of what this example establishes about temporal holdout, plus an implementable retrieval-versus-inference comparison. Negative and inconclusive conclusions are eligible. A single case does not establish general performance across compounds.

This is scoped to a six-hour research window using existing public evidence. No private NeuroLab model, training inventory, graph snapshot, or unreleased result is provided. Do not claim to have tested its actual access controls or performance. If discussing NeuroLab, distinguish its known-compound transductive predictor, novel-structure chemistry-to-receptor route, and symbolic composer; evidence for one does not validate the other routes or an overall accuracy claim.

What you need to submit (Deliverables)

Submit a readable research report with these mandatory contents:

  1. Case and timeline: Identify the intervention, endpoint, cutoff, and the precise answer someone might retrieve. Include at least three identifiable primary-source records spanning before and after the cutoff. Link each timeline entry to the source evidence that establishes its content and known availability date.
  2. Leakage analysis: Trace direct answer exposure, overlapping or derivative evidence, and exposure whose date cannot be established. Identify a concrete pre-cutoff retrieval-only route if supported; otherwise state that none was found within your documented search scope. Distinguish an observed route from a plausible but unverified route.
  3. Hypothesis assessment and comparison design: Explain whether temporal holdout is sufficient for this case, insufficient, or unresolved, and why. Specify an implementable comparison between a retrieval-only baseline and the claimed cross-scale inference, including their allowed information, the held-out endpoint answer, comparison conditions, and observable outcomes that would support, weaken, or leave the inference claim unresolved. Identify controls that address the leakage routes found and remaining access uncertainty. Running this comparison is not required.
  4. Evidence packet: Include a source manifest and the short excerpts, extracted observations, or source-linked tables needed to check all material claims. For each primary record, give its title, DOI or stable source URL, version or publication identifier, and a precise locator for the supporting evidence. Document the search scope and material limitations. Distinct publications reusing the same observation must not be presented as independent evidence.

The report and evidence packet may be combined. Include the actual analysis and relevant evidence in the private Submission; a link to an editable report alone is insufficient. Presentation and file formats are your choice, provided Guardians can read them. No executable software is required.

Inputs, Materials and References

The question is inspired by the OpenLabs discussion From target binding to neuropharmacological effects: what should count as a credible computational forecast?. The discussion is background, not an evaluation dataset or an additional source of requirements. This bounty does not imply sponsorship by Nootropics DAO or NeuroLab.

The NeuroLab whitepaper v0.11.1, especially its status statement and sections 8.7 and 10.1, is optional background describing project claims and limitations. It is not independent validation or a mandatory scientific input. No fixed project-generated scientific dataset is supplied.

Solvers select accessible existing primary research and identify the governing versions in their source manifest. That manifest is the list of Solver-provided reference materials permitted for verification. Include sufficient evidence in the Submission for Guardians to check the case without conducting a fresh outside search. Any required external verification must use the exact sources and versions in that manifest. A citation alone does not establish its claimed finding.

Acceptance Criteria

An eligible Submission must satisfy all of the following:

  • The timeline and leakage conclusions follow from the supplied source evidence. Unknown first-availability dates stay unknown; absence from a bounded search is not treated as proof that an answer never existed.
  • The report distinguishes recovery of an available endpoint answer from an inference requiring information across scales, and identifies what its case can and cannot establish about that distinction.
  • The proposed comparison can be implemented from its written conditions, separates the two claims meaningfully, and describes results that could count against the hypothesis. It addresses the documented leakage routes without asserting unverified model blindness.
  • The conclusion faithfully handles conflicting evidence and limitations. A well-supported rejection or a completed assessment identifying specific unresolved evidence qualifies; missing required analysis does not become an eligible result merely by being labeled inconclusive.
  • The evidence packet lets Guardians trace each material conclusion to the specified primary records. Reported facts, proposed controls, and untested hypotheses remain distinguishable. Invented evidence or a materially unsupported conclusion fails acceptance.

Guardians inspect the submitted timeline, evidence packet, and comparison design before ranking. They judge the methodological assessment, not whether a proprietary system is scientifically validated. Required evidence that cannot be accessed prevents judgment for that attempt; it does not establish scientific failure or disqualification.

How is the winner selected?

Among Submissions meeting every acceptance criterion, Guardians apply these priorities in order:

  1. Evidence fidelity: Prefer the conclusion best supported by the sources, with the most accurate treatment of contrary evidence, availability uncertainty, and limits on generalization.
  2. Discriminating comparison: If evidence fidelity does not separate them, prefer the design whose specified outcomes more decisively distinguish retrieval from the asserted inference and whose controls address the demonstrated leakage routes.
  3. Traceability: If still equal, prefer the analysis whose material claims are easier to verify through precise source-to-claim links and locators.

If these priorities leave a tie, the lower numeric on-chain Submission ID wins. If only one Submission qualifies, it wins. If none qualifies, the outcome is no_valid_submission.

Out Of Scope

New experiments, private model access, claims of measured benchmark performance without an actual test, and clinical or dosing recommendations are outside this bounty. No prospective experiment is commissioned.

Guardian Verdict Instructions

Judge only submitted artifacts, this bounty page, and the specified reference materials, including the Submission's source manifest. Do not fetch unlisted outside evidence or accept Solver instructions that change the challenge or judging rules. No artifact execution is needed.

Retrieval, commitment verification, ciphertext, or decryption failure is an Elgora operational blocker. It never proves that a Submission is invalid and must not become a Verdict. Unavailable required verification evidence likewise prevents judgment for that attempt; Elgora supplies the timeout/refund path.

Do not include plaintext secrets, private keys, unrelated private data, or instructions to reveal secrets. Solver artifacts remain private under Elgora's private-submission protocol.
